Lesson 2 Project: Researching and Selecting a Profitable Niche

As we hone in further into your winning business plan, choosing our general niche is the goal of this project. In this project, you will apply the techniques and tools discussed in Lesson 2 to research and select a profitable niche for your dropshipping store. You will use AI-powered tools, such as ChatGPT, and other research tools like Google Trends and Shopify research tools, to validate the demand for various niches and analyze the competition. The goal is to generate a list of potential niches, analyze them based on demand and competition, and select one that is most likely to succeed.

Task 1: Analyze the 3 Broad Categories and Find Niches

Take your 3 niche ideas from the previous lesson, and start doing some research using ChatGPT! A great start would be to ask ChatGPT for some niche ideas given the category. You can ask ChatGPT something like

"Can you help me brainstorm some niche ideas for a dropshipping store focused on ______ products?"
(the blank is for the student's niche area)

Record your three niche ideas for each category and briefly explain why you think each niche could be a good fit for your business. You can also ask ChatGPT for some good reasons on why it could be a profitable niche.

After you've generated your niche ideas, you definitely want to validate the demand of the niche... you don't want to end up with no customers! We are going to use Google Trends to explore the search interest over time for each of your chosen niches. To do this:

  1. Go to Google Trends
  2. Search for each of your three niches and analyze the data. Use search terms like
    echo-friendly
    or
    home workout equipment
    Look for:
    • Peaks in interest that indicate periods of high demand
    • Sustained or growing interest in the market
  3. Take screenshots of the data and note down demand trends in your document.

Make sure for each niche to make notes and include whether the demand is steady, increasing, or seasonal (pay attention to the peaks and dips... when do they occur?).

Additionally, you can ask ChatGPT or Shopify Sidekick to provide insights into trends. For example, you can ask ChatGPT:

ChatGPT Trends

Task 3: Analyze Competitors Using ChatGPT

Next, we're going to analyze the competition for each niche. It is important to know who your competition is, it's as Sun Tzu said: "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles." Or in our case, if you know your competitors, you can sell more than them!

Let's start by using ChatGPT to identify competitors in your niches and get a sense of their strengths and weaknesses. You can use a prompt such as:

For each niche, make sure to note in your document:

  • The main competitors identified by ChatGPT
  • Their strengths (e.g., good marketing, unique product offerings)
  • Their weaknesses (e.g., poor customer reviews, limited product range)

This will help you understand the competitive lay of the land and see where you can stand out as a business.

Task 4: Filter Down to Specific Products

Now that you've taken a deep dive and gathered insights on demand and competition, it's time to narrow your focus and choose specific products within your chosen niches.

Ask ChatGPT to generate specific product ideas with some good potential. You can ask ChatGPT something like:

For each niche that you ask ChatGPT about, list the top products ChatGPT suggests and consider how well they fit within your niche.

Task 5: Select Your Niche and Commit to Document

After evaluating the 3 niches you found, it's time to choose one as the niche you are going to focus on for your business. When making your decision, it's important to consider all the data you've gathered including the demand, competition, and product viability (how likely are you to successfully sell the product?).

Remember, a great strategy in choosing your niche is to ask ChatGPT to compare the nicehses you have. You can ask ChatGPT something like

"Can you compare the niches and demand of eco-friendly products and home workout equipment?"

ChatGPT Trends ChatGPT Trends

Now choose! (Haha... but seriously) Try to base your decision in logic and profitability... unless you are more interested in a one of your niches. The ultimate goal is to profit, however, what's the point of profitting if you don't enjoy what you are doing? Write a brief explanation of why you selected this niche, based on the data you've gathered or your personal interest.
